Frequently Asked Questions

Do you see clients online or in-person?

Both.

I have an office in downtown Easton, MD and provide Telehealth (secure and confidential video appointments).

How much do therapy sessions cost?

If you choose not to use insurance for individual therapy, or I do not accept your insurance plan, 50 minute appointments are $125.

Relationship/Couples therapy is $225 for 85-minute sessions and is not covered by insurance (self-pay only).

Limited number of sliding scale appointments available for those in need.

Can I use my insurance to pay for the sessions?

For individual or family sessions, yes. I am an in-network provider for Carefirst/Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Medicare.

Relationship/Couples therapy sessions are self-pay only.

How can I verify my insurance coverage for your services?

For individual therapy, it is always a good idea to verify your coverage and check I am in network with your particular plan.

Here are some questions you can ask your insurance:

• Is this provider (Katharine Petzold, LCSW-C) in-network with my health insurance?
• What is my in-network deductible and/or coinsurance for outpatient mental health visits (CPT codes 90791, 90837)?
• How much of my mental health deductible has been met?
• What is my copay for outpatient mental health visits? This is what you pay per session -  usually hovers around $20-40 per session; some more, some less.
• Is this coverage applicable before or after I meet my deductible?
• Are virtual outpatient mental health visits (or teletherapy) covered by my plan?

What if you don't take my insurance?

For individuals and families, I am an “out of network” provider for other insurance companies, which means if you have a PPO type insurance plan that offers out of network benefits, you should receive some reimbursement for the cost of my services. I have found that most insurances reimburse between 75-90% of my total fee per session.

What this looks like if your insurance provides out-of-network benefits:
•You pay for the session out of pocket.
•I provide you with a "super bill" which you submit to your insurance
•Your insurance reimburses you directly for a portion of the fee***

***Reimbursement rates vary from plan to plan, and depends on your ability to submit the "super bill". Contact your insurance company to find out what your specific coverage is and if you have “out-of-network” benefits.

We can talk about this in person if your coverage is confusing, or if you need any help understanding the information you have received from your insurance provider.

Some questions you can ask your insurance company:
•"What percentage am I reimbursed for routine behavioral health care out-of-network?" *
(Jargon note: "routine behavioral health care" means that you are not seeing a physician or doctor and you are not necessarily in crisis.)
•"What is my deductible?" *
•"How much of my deductible have I already met?" *
•“Is there an “allowable amount” for behavioral healthcare?*
•What is the reimbursement amount for 90791 and 90834 CPT codes?
•Does reimbursement require a diagnosis?

**Note: HMO plans do not have out-of-network benefits

Note: Most times, in order for insurance to cover mental health benefits, I would need to give you a diagnosis and share your personal health information with your insurance company.

Note: Couples therapy is not reimbursable by insurance.

How long do appointments last?

Individual and Family Appointments are 50 minutes.

Relationship/Couples therapy appointments are 85 minutes.

How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule a 15 minute consultation with me. There is no cost or obligation, and the call will be confidential and non-judgmental.

The purpose is for you to get a feel for me and allow you to ask any questions you may have to determine that it's a good fit for you.

Connecting with a therapist should be a positive, affirming experience.
